Bonnie Tyler has died aged 75.

The Grammy-nominated Welsh music legend passed away in Portugal last night following complications from emergency intestinal surgery. The news was shared in a statement issued to her official website today (July 9):

"Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for. We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy."

The singer's management confirmed in May that Tyler had been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery, after which she was placed in an induced coma to aid her recovery. Last month, a spokesperson said she was out of a coma but remained in intensive care.

Born in Skewen, South Wales, Tyler represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, but was best known for the hits Holding Out For A Hero, It's A Heartache and her signature song Total Eclipse Of The Heart. Written by Meat Loaf's lyricist Jim Steinman, the latter track topped the charts in both the UK and US, making her the first and only Welsh artist to score a number one single in the US.

She released 18 studio albums over the course of her career, with her latest, 'The Best Is Yet To Come', dropping in 2021, followed by the live record 'In Berlin' in 2024. In April, she contributed the song One World One Home to the documentary film HOMELESS, directed by Valerio Zanoli.
