As frontman of The Killers, Brandon Flowers has enjoyed global success, selling out stadiums, arenas and headlining festivals, also finding time for a more low-key but undoubtedly successful solo career that’s brought two number one albums in the UK. After a quiet period in his day job, he returns with ‘Thrasher’, which leans on country and folk influences from his upbringing in Utah. It’s an accomplished record that showcases a different side to Flowers, both in his songwriting and wider artistry. 

From the lead single Plans it was clear that this was a world apart from his previous solo work, which leant more into electronic, new wave and pop sounds. The track is a more subdued, stripped-back affair that sets up the sound of the wider album and finds Flowers in fine voice.  

For his backing band he has surrounded himself with a plethora of country veterans, including the harmonica player Charlie McCoy. These additions help to bolster his distinctive vocals and bring a sense of authenticity to the project.

There are shades of the stadium rock sound of his main group on Tiger’s Blood, which has more of an anthemic quality to it but still feels in keeping with the sound of the LP overall. It looks set to be a live favourite. 

If there is one drawback, it’s that some of the lyrics feel like they’re working too hard to sound like an out-and-out country record, veering into cliché on occasion. The opener, Does It Ever Cross Your Mind?, is one of the most glaring examples. But, for the most part, the quality of the musicianship and Flowers’ performances keep things on track.

‘Thrasher’ showcases an unexpected side to The Killers frontman but one that feels natural and rarely forced. He’s in tune with his roots in what is clearly a labour of love — with plenty of material cut that looks set to feature on a follow-up and talk of the next Killers record floating around, this is the start of what looks to be a busy period for Flowers. It is a fine way to kick off a new era.
