Two decades on from their emergence on Eel Pie Island — a tiny bit of land found in the Thames — Mystery Jets have never lost their taste for wonder. A band long defined by eccentric arrangements, psych-pop flourishes and open-hearted indie choruses, the London quartet’s seventh album continues their career-long search for something bigger than themselves.

Titled after Yoko Ono’s minimalist artwork of the same name, ‘A Hole To See The Sky Through’ is a record built around the idea of perspective. Casting its gaze upward, the nine-track collection searches for light through fear, grief, and uncertainty, guided by a looseness and warmth that suits the band beautifully.​

Recorded with producer Leo Abrahams, it thrives in its balance between weight and brightness, with that dynamic on full show from the second you hit play.

The opening title piece A Hole To See The Sky Through I boasts an immediate, infectious chorus, before Black Sage tears through with reverb-soaked psych riffs, effortlessly switching out the melodic lightness for one of the heaviest and most hypnotic moments in the band’s repertoire.

Elsewhere, the sentimental theatricality of Soul River, written in memory of a beloved friend from their Eel Pie Island community, is deeply moving, while the slow burn of Long Lonely Road brings a similarly affecting reflection on music as a form of salvation. 

Add in the widescreen, Springsteen-tinged storytelling on display throughout Anaglypta and the jittery dance-ready grooves of Flea Joint, and almost every facet of the band’s appeal appears to be captured here. 

But with the band’s melodic charms largely keeping their more experimental instincts tethered, ‘A Hole To See The Sky Through’ is arguably Mystery Jets most earnest effort to date. Filled with genuine heart, its ruminations on freedom, forgiveness, trauma and wisdom are lovely and yet they don’t hit with the immediacy of its urgent 2020 predecessor ‘A Billion Heartbeats’. Nor do they deal in the same sun-soaked sugar rush as 2008’s ‘Twenty One’. 

Still, there’s undeniable charm in their endless pursuit of positivity. Curious, a little strange, and shamelessly eclectic, this offers further proof that Mystery Jets more than deserve their spot among the modern greats of British guitar music.
