Songs of Praise: Jimmy Eat World's 'Bleed American' Still Hits 25 Years Later

Following a bustling summer of events at Cardiff Castle, with everyone from the Streets to Katy Perry making memories in the Welsh capital, it fell to Jimmy Eat World to deliver a glorious night of nostalgia as the perfect curtain call. 

Fans young and old gathered to pay tribute to the Arizona emo icons’ classic 2001 album ‘Bleed American’ — some had clearly played the album a million times since its release a quarter of a century ago, while the smaller emos in attendance weren’t even alive when it hit shelves. Regardless of whether they were born this side of the millennium or not, the love and respect for such a legendary album was obvious in its reception by a packed crowd.  

Ahead of the main attraction, the audience were treated to superb sets from Jay Som, The Get Up Kids and Rise Against, with the latter bringing forth their own tempest of nostalgia. If anything, these triumphant opening performances transformed the day into a much wider celebration of the alternative scene. 

When Jimmy Eat World finally took to the stage, they teased the crowd just a little bit by kicking off with Clarity before swinging into Your New Aesthetic, Blister and Lucky Denver Mint. But then came the unmistakable drums of the title track to ‘Bleed American’, which heralded the arrival of the pièce de résistance. 

The stage opened up and searing lights blinded the front rows as a surge of energy raced through the crowd. Every soul inside the castle walls screamed out the song’s “Salt, sweat, sugar on the asphalt!” hook in unison, the fervour sending shivers down the spine. Just like that, it was 2001 again. 

From this moment onwards, the crowd sang along word for word like it was an emo special of (A) Songs of Praise (Chorus). All the while, despite soaking in the love on offer, lead singer Jim Adkins was still in disbelief that ‘Bleed American’ meant so much to everyone all these years later. 

Alternative anthems The Middle and Sweetness still hit like the first time they blasted out of our CD players, while Hear You Me had the crowd swaying in euphoric joy. After the album tribute came to an end the band closed out proceedings with an encore packed with hits.

As the noise faded and we returned to the year 2026, a lot of people reminisced about where they were when they first heard ‘Bleed American’. They were all over. But they’re all here together, and they will remember this night in Cardiff.
