Elton John will return to Mexico City for two final farewell shows later this year.

The global superstar will perform at Estadio Banorte (aka Estadio Azteca) on October 2 and 3, with tickets going on general sale at 12pm local time on July 16.

The performances are his official farewell to the city after the COVID-19 pandemic forced him to cancel a run of dates in the region as part of his mammoth Farewell Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour. He said in a statement:

"Mexico City has always held a special place in my heart. I was truly disappointed that the pandemic kept me from touring Latin America during my Farewell tour which makes this return especially meaningful. I’m thrilled to finally share this very special moment with my fans after all these years…”

The Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award-winner first played two shows at Estadio Azteca 34 years ago as part of The One Tour, though he last performed in Mexico City in 2012 for the Elton & Ray Cooper shows at Auditorio Nacional.

Spanning 2018 to 2023, his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour became one of the biggest tours ever, ending his touring career after more than 4,600 shows worldwide.

Since retiring from the road, John teamed up with Brandi Carlile for the collaborative album 'Who Believes In Angels?', released last year. He also featured on Sam Fender's track Talk To Me from the deluxe edition of 'People Watching', composed music for The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical, put out 'Live From The Rainbow Theatre With Ray Cooper', and released an expanded 50th anniversary edition of his ninth studio album, 'Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy'.
