The Smiths are an alternative rock band from Manchester, England, who enjoyed great success throughout the 80s. Consisting originally and most famously of frontman Morrssey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bass player Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce, they put out their eponymous debut album in 1984, hitting #2 in the UK Albums chart.

Despite their singles never really breaking into the Top 10, and a lack of international success while they were still together, the band are often considered the 'most important' alternative rock band from Britain in the 80s, with their following three albums all hitting either #1 or #2 in the UK Albums chart.
