Mercyful Fate are a progressive metal band from Copenhagen, Denmark.

Part of the first wave of black metal in the 1980s, along with Venom and Bathory, the band are widely considered to be one of the most influential pioneering artists of the genre.

The band's discography stretches to seven studio albums, however they have not released any music since 1999's '9', aside from a Best Of album in 2003 and a standalone single, Evil, in 2009. Having dipped in and out of hiatuses since the release of '9', the band announced in 2019 that they would be reuniting and recording their first album in 20 years.
