Sir Ian McKellen is an actor from Burnley, England.

He trained at the University of Cambridge and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, beginning his professional stage career in 1961, going on to gain national treasure status for his extensive work in theatre, film and television, including acclaimed performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and iconic roles in films such as The Lord Of The Rings trilogy (2001–2003) and the X‑Men franchise (2000–2014).

He has received a plethora of honours for his work, including six Laurence Olivier Awards, a Tony, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Fellowship, as well as two Academy Award nominations. He was knighted in 1991 and appointed to the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2008.
